Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

The strictly correct answer is pre-tax: tax goes to the government, not to the person serving you. In practice most people tip on the total because it is easier, and card terminals almost always calculate their suggested percentages from the post-tax figure.

The difference is small — on a $100 bill with 8 percent tax, tipping 20 percent post-tax costs $1.60 more. Worth knowing, rarely worth arguing about. What is worth checking is whether a service charge or gratuity has already been applied, which is common for large groups and increasingly common generally. Tipping on top of an included 18 percent service charge is how a bill quietly reaches 40 percent.

Splitting a bill fairly

Dividing the total evenly is fastest and works when everyone ordered comparably. It stops being fair when one person had a starter and tap water while another had three courses and a bottle of wine.

The usual compromise is to split proportionally: each person covers what they ordered, then adds the same percentage for tip and tax. When splitting evenly, round the per-person amount up rather than down — rounding down repeatedly is the most common reason a group ends up short at the till.

The fastest mental shortcut for 20 percent: move the decimal one place left, then double it. For 15 percent, take that 10 percent figure and add half of it again.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Pre-tax is technically correct, since tax is not part of the service. Most people and most card terminals use the post-tax total, and on a typical bill the difference is a dollar or two.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Then no additional tip is expected. Check the itemised bill for wording such as service charge, gratuity or coperto before adding anything — this is the most common way people accidentally tip twice.

How much should I tip on a large group booking?

Many restaurants automatically add 18 to 20 percent for parties above six or eight. If that has been applied, nothing further is needed.

Is it rude not to tip?

It depends entirely on the country. In the United States it is a serious breach because tipped wages are low. In Japan it may be refused or cause offence. Across most of Europe it is optional.
